Numerical Modeling
A diagnostic, numerical model has been used to
look at the circulation in 1998 a year of a large toxic event on the
Washington coast. Below are shown drifter tracks in the
region of the Juan de Fuca eddy derived from the
model
using observed density field data for 1998 (MacFadyen, Foreman, Hickey,
unpub. data). Triangles show positions at which drifters were
released in the modeled velocity field. ARGOS positions of two ocean
drifters deployed
in Sept 2001 are also shown by the blue circles. Solid circles indicate
daily intervals. The two cases show model results both with and without
a northward (‘storm’) wind.
